Positive Language of Massage
Many people unknowingly use outdated terms that are offensive to the massage community. So here is the skinny:
Much like the airline industry moved from "steward / stewardess" to "flight attendant", we have adopted the unbiased gender-neutral term "massage therapist" as it is our legal designation. What we do is correctly said "massage" or "massage therapy", and our business is termed a "massage practice" or "massage office"; just as you would refer to other health care practitioners' offices. In the state of Illinois, massage therapists are licensed health care practitioners as determined by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
The terms to stay away from are, much to our disappointment, more common in the general media. There is an effort being made to redefine editors' stylebooks (also style guide or style manual) to strike terms of "French origin" and that other word that means "sitting room in a private house." This term "parlor" is as off-putting as "medical parlor" or physical therapy parlor." It is not an appropriate massage term and, in the mind of the average person, is associated with illicit activity which is more accurately described as prostitution.
So if you hear someone saying the wrong thing, speak up! Say "You know, I think they say ... now." Every effort helps to educate and support massage and its practitioners. Now, go check out some AWESOME research done by the Buck Institute on massage!!
